Post Weight Loss Surgery
Excess Skin Removal Surgery in Manchester
Losing a large amount of weight — through diet and exercise, a GLP‑1 weight‑loss medication, or bariatric surgery — is a remarkable achievement. For many people it also leaves behind loose, hanging skin that no amount of training, protein or skin cream will tighten. Post weight loss surgery at Deansgate Hospital removes that excess skin and rebuilds the underlying shape, so the body you see matches the work you have put in.
Our consultant plastic surgeons perform arm lifts, thigh lifts, tummy tucks, breast uplifts and facelifts in our CQC‑registered hospital in the centre of Manchester, with your whole plan — often staged across two or three operations — mapped out at a single consultation.
Body Contouring Surgery
What is post weight loss surgery?
Treatment Overview
Post weight loss surgery — also called body contouring surgery or excess skin removal — is a group of plastic surgery operations that remove surplus skin and fat and re‑drape what remains over a tighter frame. Skin that has been stretched for years loses its elastin; when the volume underneath disappears, the skin does not shrink back. Surgery is the only way to remove it.
Most patients need more than one procedure. A typical plan might combine an abdominoplasty with an arm lift in one operation, then a thigh lift or breast uplift six months later. Your surgeon will tell you what can safely be done together and in what order.
To be clear: we are plastic surgeons, not bariatric surgeons. Deansgate Hospital does not perform gastric sleeves, gastric bypasses or gastric bands. We treat what weight loss leaves behind. Patients come to us after losing weight on the newer weight‑loss injections, after bariatric surgery elsewhere, or through their own diet and training — and the surgical problem is the same in every case.
Restoring Your Shape
Post Weight Loss Surgery Manchester at Deansgate Hospital
Deansgate Hospital is a CQC‑registered private surgical hospital on Little Peter Street, M15, in central Manchester — a few minutes from Deansgate‑Castlefield Metrolink, St Peter’s Square and Manchester Piccadilly, with on‑site parking for patients travelling in by car.
Body contouring after weight loss is longer, more complex surgery than a standard cosmetic procedure, and it matters where it is done. Everything happens under one roof: your consultation, your pre‑operative assessment, your operation in our own theatres, an overnight stay where you need one, and every follow‑up appointment. You are cared for by the same consultant plastic surgeon throughout — not passed between sites or seen by whoever is on the rota.
We look after patients from across Greater Manchester — Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Wigan — as well as Cheshire, Warrington, Liverpool, Preston and Leeds, with the M60, M602 and M56 all within easy reach.
Which Procedures Are Part of Post Weight Loss Surgery?
Body Contouring Procedures After Weight Loss
There is no single operation for post weight loss surgery. Your plan is built around where you carry the loose skin, how much there is, and what bothers you most. These are the procedures we perform most often after major weight loss.
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
The most requested procedure after weight loss. Excess skin and the overhanging fold (the ‘apron’) are removed through a low incision hidden by underwear, separated abdominal muscles are repaired, and the belly button is repositioned. Where the loose skin also hangs sideways, a fleur‑de‑lis abdominoplasty adds a vertical incision to tighten the waist as well — often the only way to get a good result after very large weight loss.
Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
Loose skin from the armpit to the elbow is removed through an incision along the inner arm, where it sits out of view when your arms are down. For many patients this is the change that finally makes short sleeves comfortable again. It is frequently combined with an abdominoplasty in a single anaesthetic.
Thigh Lift
Excess skin on the inner thighs — the cause of chafing, rubbing and difficulty with certain clothing — is removed through an incision in the groin crease, extended down the inner thigh when more skin needs to come out. Liposuction is often used alongside it to refine the shape.
Breast Uplift (Mastopexy)
Weight loss empties the breast and leaves it flat and low. A mastopexy lifts the breast and repositions the nipple; where volume is also missing, an augmentation mastopexy adds an implant or your own fat in the same operation. Men who have lost significant weight may need chest skin excision or gynaecomastia surgery instead.
Facelift and Neck Lift
Significant weight loss ages the face — the cheeks hollow, the jawline softens and the neck loosens — an effect often talked about after rapid medical weight loss. A facelift or deep plane face and neck lift tightens the deeper tissue and removes the surplus skin, sometimes with fat transfer to restore lost volume.
Lower Body Lift and Mons Reduction
Where loose skin runs the whole way round, a lower body lift (belt lipectomy) treats the abdomen, hips, outer thighs and buttocks in one circumferential procedure. A mons reduction removes the heavy pad of skin and fat above the pubic bone — a small operation that makes a disproportionate difference.

Am I suitable for post weight loss surgery?
Ideal Candidate for Body Contouring
The best candidates are people who have reached a weight they can hold and are now limited by the skin that is left — skin that rubs, catches, gets sore or damp underneath, and dictates what they can wear. Your surgeon will look at the following:
- A stable weight for at least six months. Losing more weight after surgery creates new laxity; regaining it stretches your result.
- A BMI that is safe to operate on — generally under 30, and under 35 for longer or combined procedures.
- Good nutrition. After bariatric surgery in particular, protein, iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D need to be adequate for wounds to heal. We check this before we operate.
- Not smoking or vaping for at least six weeks before and after surgery — nicotine is the single biggest avoidable cause of wound breakdown in this type of surgery.
- Well‑controlled general health, including diabetes, blood pressure and sleep apnoea.
- Realistic expectations about scars. Post weight loss surgery trades loose skin for permanent scars. Patients who understand that trade are the ones who are happiest afterwards.
- A completed family, ideally. Pregnancy after an abdominoplasty will undo the muscle repair.
Good General Health
You should be in reasonable physical health, a non-smoker or willing to stop well before surgery, and at a stable weight. If you are planning further pregnancies or major weight loss, it is usually better to wait.
Realistic Expectations
A tummy tuck transforms the shape of the abdomen but leaves a scar low across the tummy that fades over 12–18 months. Your surgeon will show you where it will sit and what results you can realistically expect.
What Can Post Weight Loss Surgery Address?
Regain your confidence
Body contouring after weight loss treats the overhanging abdominal apron, loose skin on the arms and inner thighs, flattened and sagging breasts, a heavy mons, a softened jawline and neck, and the rashes, chafing and recurrent skin infections that come with skin folds that never fully dry. Just as importantly, it closes the gap between the weight you have worked to lose and the shape you see in the mirror.

Your Post Weight Loss Surgery Journey
Body Contouring Step by Step
Start your post weight loss surgery journey by booking a consultation with one of our consultant plastic surgeons in central Manchester.
Discuss Your Goals You will talk through how much weight you have lost, how you lost it, how long you have held it, and which areas of loose skin trouble you most.
Physical Examination Your surgeon will assess the quality and quantity of excess skin on your abdomen, arms, thighs, breasts and face, and explain what each procedure can and cannot achieve. Where you need more than one operation, they will set out the order and the intervals between them.
Your Plan and Quote You will receive a written plan and a fixed price before you leave, along with the scars each procedure involves and the realistic recovery time.
Preop Checks Routine bloods and a medical review before surgery. After bariatric surgery or long‑term GLP‑1 use we also check protein, iron, vitamin B12 and vitamin D, and correct anything low before we operate.
Preparation Stop smoking and vaping at least six weeks beforehand. You will be given guidance on medication, compression garments, and arranging help at home for the first week. Stop any GLP-1 medications about 3 weeks before surgery.
Admission You will be admitted to the ward by our nursing team and seen by your surgeon and anaesthetist. Your surgeon will mark the planned incisions. The will discuss the procedure and consent you for the operation.
The Operation Post weight loss surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and takes from two to six hours depending on the combination. A compression garment are usually fitted before you wake. In some cases, drains may be used.
After Surgery You will be monitored closely in recovery, then on the ward. Most patients having a single procedure go home the same day or after one night; combined or circumferential procedures usually mean a one or two night stay.
Comfort Pain is well controlled with local anaesthetic, regular medication and, where appropriate, nerve blocks. You will be helped up and walking the same day to reduce the risk of clots.
Going Home You will leave with your compression garment on, a supply of medication, written aftercare instructions and a direct number for our nursing team.
Follow‑Up Drains are removed as they settle, wounds are reviewed within the first week or two, and you will be seen regularly by your own surgeon through the first year.
First Two Weeks Rest, short regular walks and no lifting. Expect tightness, swelling and bruising.
Two to Six Weeks Most patients return to desk‑based work at two to three weeks and to driving once they can perform an emergency stop comfortably. Compression is worn for six weeks.
Six Weeks Onwards Gym and heavier exercise resume at around six to eight weeks. Swelling settles over three to six months, and scars fade and flatten over twelve to eighteen months with silicone and sun protection.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait after losing weight before having surgery?
Your weight should be stable for at least six months, and ideally twelve. After bariatric surgery that usually means twelve to eighteen months from your operation. If you are still losing on a weight‑loss injection, it is worth waiting until your weight has plateaued — operating too early means loose skin returns.
Do you perform gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery?
No. Deansgate Hospital is a plastic surgery hospital, not a bariatric unit. We do not perform gastric sleeves, bypasses, bands or balloons. We specialise in the surgery that comes afterwards — removing excess skin and restoring your shape once the weight is off.
Can I have surgery after losing weight on weight-loss injections?
Yes, and we see a growing number of these patients. The surgical problem is the same as after bariatric surgery. Two things need attention first: your weight must have stabilised, and your nutrition — particularly protein — must be adequate for healing, since rapid GLP‑1 weight loss often includes muscle. Your surgeon will also advise on pausing the medication before a general anaesthetic.
Can several procedures be done at the same time?
Often, yes. An abdominoplasty with an arm lift, or a breast uplift with an abdominoplasty, are commonly combined in one anaesthetic — one recovery, one period off work, and a lower total cost. What can safely be combined depends on your health, your BMI and the expected operating time. Your surgeon will not combine procedures where it increases your risk meaningfully.
How bad are the scars?
They are permanent and they are not short. Post weight loss surgery trades loose skin for scars, and that is the honest deal. Incisions are placed where clothing and underwear hide them wherever possible. Scars are red and raised for the first few months, then fade and flatten over twelve to eighteen months. Silicone gel or tape, massage and sun protection all improve the final appearance.
How much does post weight loss surgery cost in Manchester?
Individual procedures start from £7,500, with a full breakdown on our prices page. Combined procedures are quoted together and usually cost less than having them separately. Every quote is fixed and includes the surgeon, anaesthetist, theatre, hospital stay and follow‑up. Finance options are available.
Is excess skin removal available on the NHS?
Rarely. NHS funding is restricted to cases where an overhanging fold causes documented, recurrent skin problems that have not responded to treatment, and criteria vary by integrated care board. Most patients in Greater Manchester find that funding is declined or that waiting times are very long, and choose to have surgery privately.
How long will I need off work?
Two to three weeks for desk‑based work after a single procedure, and four to six weeks for physical or manual work. Combined or circumferential procedures need longer. You should not drive until you can perform an emergency stop without hesitating — usually two to three weeks.
Will surgery remove my stretch marks?
Stretch marks on the skin that is removed go with it — which after an abdominoplasty usually means most of those below the belly button. Stretch marks on skin that stays will remain, though they often look less obvious once the skin is tightened.
Will I lose weight from the surgery?
Post weight loss surgery is not a weight loss operation. Removing a large apron of skin can mean several kilograms come off, but the purpose is shape, comfort and skin health, not the number on the scales. Patients who still have significant weight to lose are advised to lose it first.
What are the risks?
All surgery carries risk. For post weight loss surgery specifically these include bleeding, infection, fluid collections (seroma), delayed wound healing — particularly where incisions meet — changes in skin sensation, asymmetry, poor scarring, and the risk of blood clots. Smoking, a high BMI and poor nutrition raise every one of them. Your surgeon will discuss the risks that apply to you at consultation.
Can I have a baby after a tummy tuck?
You can, but pregnancy will stretch the skin and undo the muscle repair, and you may need revision surgery afterwards. If you are planning a family, it is better to wait.
Thinking about surgery after weight loss?
Post Weight Loss Surgery in Manchester
Body contouring after major weight loss is among the most rewarding surgery we perform — and among the most demanding. It asks more of the surgeon than a routine cosmetic procedure, because the skin is poorer quality, the areas are larger, and the plan usually spans more than one operation. It is worth choosing a hospital that does this work regularly.
Before committing to any procedure, do your research. Choose a consultant plastic surgeon on the GMC Specialist Register, ask to see results from patients who have lost a similar amount of weight, and make sure you understand where the scars will be.
