Breast Reduction

Reduction Mammaplasty Manchester

Breast reduction, also known as Reduction mammoplasty,  is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size and weight of the breasts. During this operation, we remove excess breast tissue, skin, and fat to achieve breasts that are smaller, uplifted, and more proportionate to the individual’s body shape. A breast reduction will also involve a mastopexy, which lifts the breasts by tightening the surrounding tissue and repositioning the nipple–areola complex to create a perkier silhouette.

What is Breast Reduction?

Treatment Overview

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, and each individual’s breasts are unique in their anatomy and appearance. However, for some, overly large or heavy breasts can cause challenges that affect both physical comfort and self-confidence. The medical term for large breasts is breast hypertrophy. Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, can help those who are experiencing discomfort, back and neck pain, or social and psychological challenges related to having large breasts.

In Manchester, breast reduction has become an increasingly popular procedure, as it offers women a more proportional breast size that aligns with their body frame and personal preferences. In many cases, a mastopexy (or breast lift) may be combined or performed as a standalone procedure to address breast droopiness and reposition the nipple.

Studies indicate that breast reduction surgery can improve quality of life by alleviating back and neck pain, improving posture, and reducing skin irritation under the breast crease. Beyond these physical benefits, breast reduction can have a positive psychological impact, boosting self-esteem and confidence.

For people considering a breast reduction Manchester, our hospital offers access to skilled plastic surgeons experienced in various surgical techniques. Our Manchester-based  day case hospital also feature state-of-the-art facilities, ensuring you receive the highest standard of care.

What are the symptoms of breast hypertrophy?

Indications for breast reduction

There are many reasons why women seek to have breast reduction surgery.  These may be due to symptoms of havign large hypetrophic breasts or psychological issues related to the breast size.  These are the most common reasons why we perform breast reduction in Manchester.

Physical Symptoms

Neck, shoulder and upper back pain, grooving where bra straps cut into the shoulders, rashes and skin irritation in the fold beneath the breast, and difficulty finding clothes or a bra that fits. These are the symptoms that bring most women to a breast reduction consultation, and they are the ones most reliably relieved by surgery.

Functional and Postural Impact

Difficulty exercising or running, restricted activity, altered posture, and the discomfort of carrying significant weight on the front of the chest all day. Many patients describe the relief after surgery as the most immediate and noticeable change — often apparent within days rather than months.

Am I suitable for breast reduction surgery?

Things to consider before reduction mammaplasty

Breast reduction is planned around several factors that will be discussed with you at your consultation with our surgeons at Deansgate Hospital: how much tissue needs to be removed, the position of your nipple relative to the inframammary fold, the scar pattern that follows from it, your skin quality, and whether you may want to breastfeed in future. These decide the technique and they are assessed by examination, not by cup size.

Target Size

You should think about the size you actually want to be, rather than a cup size, which is not a standard measurement. Your surgeon will discuss what is achievable given your frame, how much tissue can safely be removed, and where your nipple will sit afterwards. Removing too much creates its own problems, and the aim is proportion rather than the smallest possible result.

Family and Weight Plans

Pregnancy and breastfeeding will change the result, and significant weight loss will too. Breast reduction is most durable once your family is complete and your weight has been stable for six months or more. Breastfeeding is often still possible afterwards but cannot be guaranteed, and if that matters to you it should be part of the conversation before surgery rather than after.

Living With Your Result

Aftercare and long-term breast health

A breast reduction is permanent, but your breasts continue to respond to weight change, pregnancy and time. A few things are worth knowing.

Breast checks. All women should check their breasts regularly and attend screening when invited. Tell the mammography service that you have had breast reduction surgery so the images are taken and interpreted correctly — surgery changes the appearance of the tissue on a mammogram but does not prevent screening or make it less effective.

Weight. Significant weight gain or loss will change the size and shape of the result. The operation is most durable when your weight is stable.

Support. Wearing a properly fitted, supportive bra — particularly for exercise — genuinely affects how well the shape holds over the years.

Scars. Silicone gel or tape from the point the wounds are fully healed, and protect the scars from the sun for the first year. Final scar appearance is judged at twelve to eighteen months.

Physical Examination Identify any issues with the existing implants or if an uplift is required. Based on your unique goals, our surgeon will explain what exchange can and cannot achieve. They will also discuss any alternative or complementary procedures that may give better results such as a breast lift if significant breast ptosis or drooping is present.

Review Your Medical History Any current medications, allergies, and past surgical experiences. If you have your implant information from the previous surgery this can be very helpful.

Discuss Treatment Options Our surgeon will recommend some implant sizes and operative plan.

Explain Risks and Benefits You will gain an understanding of the potential risks and expected outcomes.

Preop Checks: Routine checks and medical review beofre surgery.

Wound Care: Carefully follow our instructions for cleaning and dressing your incisions, if necessary.

Follow-Up Appointments: We will schedule follow-up visits within the first week or two to check on your healing, remove any dressings, and assess incision sites.

Support Bra: These should be worn for 6 weeks following surgery and your surgeon will provide specific advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of scar can I expect?

The scar pattern typically depends on the amount of reduction and the degree of lift required. The anchor scar (inverted T) is common for more significant reductions, while a lollipop scar (vertical incision) is used for moderate reductions. A periareolar lift may be enough for mild sagging.

Yes. In many reduction mammoplasty procedures, a mastopexy is inherently part of the process. The surgeon removes excess tissue and lifts the breast to a higher, more youthful position. If you require only a minor reduction but a significant lift, the procedure is often referred to more specifically as a mastopexy.

Recovery times vary. Many patients feel comfortable returning to work within 1–2 weeks. However, if your job involves physical labour or lifting, you may need 3–4 weeks or longer before resuming normal duties.

There is a risk that you will not be able to breast feed after a breast reduction. If future childbearing is a consideration, discuss this with your surgeon. Some techniques aim to preserve glandular tissue and milk ducts as much as possible, but this is not guaranteed.

What are the risks of breast reduction surgery?

Any surgical procedure carries potential risks. Breast reduction is a well-established operation with a good safety record, but the recognised risks include bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing — most often at the T-junction where the scar lines meet — altered or reduced nipple sensation, asymmetry, fat necrosis producing a firm lump, and scars that heal thicker or wider than hoped. Loss of the nipple is rare and is strongly associated with smoking and with very large reductions. Breastfeeding may be affected. Your surgeon will go through all of these with you and give you written information before you consent.

In some cases, women with documented and significant medical concerns may be able to have this procedure through the NHS. However, this is subject to eligibility criteria, and not all patients will qualify. The criteria have become increasingly more strict and now very few are able to have this on the NHS.

Several factors will influence the cost of your reduction mammaplasty procedure in Manchester:

Surgeon’s Fees: A surgeon with extensive expertise in complex revision cases may charge a higher fee.

Anaesthetist’s Fees: Cost may vary depending on the length of the procedure.

Hospital Fees: This includes operating theatre expenses, nursing care, and postop checks.

Yes we do have some finance options to spread the cost of the procedure. To find out more please contact the hospital.
