What is a mini tummy tuck?
Treatment Overview
A mini tummy tuck — properly, a mini abdominoplasty — treats the abdomen below the umbilicus and nothing above it. The surgeon makes a horizontal incision low across the lower abdomen, usually shorter than a full tummy tuck scar and sited to sit within a bikini line or underwear. Loose skin and the fat attached to it are removed as a single wedge. Where the lower part of the rectus muscle has separated, it is tightened with a row of internal sutures. The remaining skin is drawn down and closed.
What makes it “mini” is not that it is a lesser version of the same operation. It is a different, smaller operation: the skin flap is only lifted as far as the navel, the navel itself stays where it is and is not moved or reinset, and there is no vertical scar around it. That is why the recovery is shorter — and also why its reach is limited.

A mini treats: loose skin confined to below the navel, a small lower-abdominal muscle separation, a low caesarean-section shelf, and a modest lower pouch in someone otherwise near their target weight.
A mini does not treat: skin laxity above the navel, muscle separation extending above the navel, a navel that has been dragged downwards or has become slit-like, an overhanging apron, or stretch marks above the belly button. None of these improve with a mini, and some look slightly worse afterwards because the tissue below has been tightened and the tissue above has not.
The test: lie flat and lift the skin below your navel. If everything that bothers you moves, a mini may be enough. If your upper abdomen still looks loose, or your navel moves downwards with the pull, you need a full abdominoplasty.

There are four operations for the abdomen and they are not interchangeable. Which one you need is decided by two things your surgeon can assess in about a minute: whether your skin has lost its elasticity, and whether your rectus muscles have separated. Everything else — scar length, recovery time, price — follows from those two answers.
1. Abdominal Liposuction — from £4,500
For a stubborn lower-abdominal bulge in someone whose skin still snaps back. No skin is removed, there is no long scar, and recovery is a fortnight. If you pinch the skin and it springs back flat, and your muscle wall is intact, this is your operation — and it is half the price of a mini. Anyone whose skin has already given way will be disappointed by liposuction alone; removing the fat from under loose skin makes the skin looser.
2. Mini Tummy Tuck — from £6,500
For laxity confined below the navel, with or without a small lower-abdominal muscle separation. A short low scar, the navel untouched, and a recovery measured in two to three weeks rather than six. The right operation for a relatively small group: usually one or two pregnancies, close to target weight, and a lower pouch or caesarean shelf as the only complaint.
3. Full Abdominoplasty — from £8,500
For laxity above and below the navel, and for muscle separation that runs up towards the ribs. The skin is lifted to the ribcage, the full length of the rectus muscle is repaired, the navel is brought out through a new opening, and a longer hip-to-hip scar is accepted in exchange for a genuinely flat abdomen. This is what most people who ask for a mini actually need.

The better choice where the problem is a thickened trunk rather than a loose front, and the usual recommendation after significant weight loss.

Am I suitable for a mini tummy tuck?
Ideal Candidate for Mini Abdominoplasty
The ideal candidate is someone within a stone or so of a stable target weight, whose abdominal complaint sits entirely below the navel, whose navel is in a normal position and normal shape, and who has either no muscle separation or a small one confined to the lower abdomen. A low caesarean scar with a shelf of tissue sitting over it is the classic presentation, and it responds beautifully.
You are not a candidate if your skin is loose above the navel, if your muscle separation extends upwards, if you have an overhanging apron, if your BMI is above 30, or if you are planning further pregnancies or significant weight loss. Smokers are asked to stop for at least six weeks either side of surgery — abdominal wound healing is more sensitive to smoking than almost any other site, and we will not operate on someone who is still smoking.
Below the Navel Only
The defining criterion. A mini lifts skin as far as the umbilicus and stops. If what bothers you is above that line, the operation cannot reach it, and no amount of technique changes that.
Weight Stable First
Results are best and longest lasting when your weight has been steady for six months or more. A mini tummy tuck is a shaping operation, not a weight-loss one, and further loss will simply reproduce the laxity.

Every abdominal operation at Deansgate Hospital follows the same path: a full surgical consultation with the consultant who would operate, a cooling-off period, pre-operative screening, the surgery in our own theatres with an overnight stay, and twelve months of included follow-up. Here is what each stage involves.
You are examined standing and lying flat. Your surgeon assesses skin quality and elasticity, the position and shape of your navel, the extent of any muscle separation (felt by asking you to lift your head off the couch, which makes the rectus edges stand out), the amount and distribution of fat, and the position of any existing scars. Those findings are what decide between liposuction, a mini and a full abdominoplasty — not what you have read or what you have been quoted elsewhere.
You will be told plainly which operation you need, including when that is the more expensive one, and including when the answer is that surgery is not the right step yet. Photographs are taken for your record. You go away with written information and a fixed quotation, and you are not asked to decide on the day.
You are marked while standing. Under general anaesthetic, a low transverse incision is made — typically 15 to 25cm, shorter than a full abdominoplasty scar and placed to sit inside underwear. The skin and fat of the lower abdomen are lifted as far as the umbilicus and no further. The excess is removed as a wedge, any lower rectus separation is repaired with internal sutures, and the skin is drawn down and closed in layers over a drain.
The navel is not moved and there is no scar around it. The operation takes ninety minutes to two hours. You wake in a compression garment, and you go home the same day.
Days 1 to 3. You will feel tight rather than sharply sore, and you will walk slightly bent forward — that is expected and it straightens out. Painkillers, the compression garment day and night, and short regular walks around the house to protect against clots. The drain usually comes out at the first dressing check.
Days 4 to 14. Swelling peaks around day three to five and then settles. Bruising tracks downwards, which is normal. You are seen in clinic at around a week. Most people with desk-based jobs go back at two weeks; driving is usually possible at two weeks once you can brake sharply without hesitating. No lifting anything heavier than a kettle.
Weeks 3 to 6. Light cardiovascular exercise resumes — walking first, and nothing more strenuous. No abdominal work of any kind, no lifting, no running. Keep the compression garment on; six weeks is the number and cutting it short is the commonest reason for a poor contour.
Weeks 6 to 12. Most restrictions lift. Core and abdominal training can restart, gradually, from around eight weeks. Swelling continues to settle, often unevenly, and it is normal for the lower abdomen to feel firm and numb across a band above the scar — sensation returns over six to twelve months and occasionally does not fully return.
Months 3 to 12. The scar reddens and firms between three and six months before fading through the rest of the year. Silicone gel or tape is started once the wound is fully healed. The final shape is judged at six months and the final scar at twelve to eighteen.
A mini abdominoplasty is a smaller operation than a full one but it is still major surgery. The commonest complication is a seroma, a collection of fluid beneath the skin flap, which typically appears in the second or third week and is drained in clinic with a needle, sometimes more than once. It is inconvenient rather than dangerous.
Other recognised risks are bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing at the centre of the scar, altered or reduced sensation in the skin below the navel (very common, usually temporary), fat necrosis producing a firm lump, asymmetry, and a scar that heals thicker or wider than hoped. Dog-ears — small puckers at the ends of the scar — occur in a minority and are corrected under local anaesthetic.
The serious risk of any abdominal operation is venous thromboembolism: clot in the leg or lung. We assess every patient formally, use compression stockings and calf pumps in theatre, get you walking the same day, and prescribe anticoagulant injections where indicated. Smoking multiplies wound healing problems several-fold and we will not operate on a current smoker.
Finally, the risk that is specific to this operation: choosing a mini when you needed a full. The result is a flat lower abdomen beneath a loose upper one, and correcting it means a second, bigger operation and a second scar. This is why we would rather turn a mini down than perform one.

A mini cannot repair the part above. If your separation is limited to the lower abdomen a mini works well; if it is not, you would be paying for a partial repair.

Usually yes, and it is one of the best indications for the operation.
