B-Lite Implants
Lightweight Breast Implants in Manchester
B-Lite is a breast implant made by POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics in Germany. Its distinguishing feature is weight: it is up to 30% lighter than a conventional silicone implant of identical dimensions, achieved by suspending hollow borosilicate microspheres within the cohesive silicone gel. The spheres are permanently bonded into the gel and withstand pressures above 200 psi, so they do not separate out or collapse in use. The device is CE marked and MRI compatible.
The rationale is straightforward. A conventional implant is essentially a fixed weight hung on the front of the chest, and gravity works on it for as long as it is there. Reducing that weight reduces the load on the skin envelope and the tissues supporting it.
Whether that matters for you depends entirely on your volume and your tissue — and for a good number of women it makes very little practical difference. That is the part the marketing tends to skip, and it is what the rest of this page is about.
How B-Lite Works
The technology, in plain terms
What Makes It Lighter
A standard silicone implant is a shell filled with cohesive silicone gel. Silicone gel is denser than breast tissue, which is why a large implant feels heavier than the equivalent volume of your own breast.
B-Lite replaces part of that gel volume with hollow borosilicate microspheres — microscopic glass spheres with air inside them, of the type originally developed for aerospace use. Because the spheres are hollow, they occupy volume without contributing much mass. The implant is the same size and the same shape as its conventional equivalent; it simply weighs less.
Three things matter about how they are made. The spheres are biocompatible. They are permanently bonded within the cohesive gel rather than floating in it, so they cannot settle or separate. And they are engineered to withstand pressures above 200 psi — roughly thirteen atmospheres — so they do not crush under the forces an implant experiences in the body.
The implants come in round and anatomical shapes with a range of profiles and surfaces, so the choice of B-Lite does not restrict the choice of shape.
The trade-off you should know about
Adding microspheres to the gel makes it behave slightly differently. In practice the rim of a B-Lite implant is a little stiffer than the equivalent conventional implant.
For most women, under adequate soft tissue cover, that is not detectable. But if you are slim, have little breast tissue of your own, or are having an implant placed in front of the muscle, a firmer edge is more likely to be felt — and occasionally seen — at the border of the implant. That is a genuine consideration, not a theoretical one, and it is the reason your surgeon will pinch-test your soft tissue cover before recommending B-Lite rather than simply offering it as the premium option.
It is also the main reason we would sometimes steer a thin patient towards a conventional implant behind the muscle instead. If a page about B-Lite does not mention this at all, it is selling rather than advising.
Lighter Is Not Automatically Better
B-Lite Implants in Manchester at Deansgate Hospital
The weight saving is a measured physical property: 30% less, for the same dimensions. What that translates to over years is a reasonable inference rather than a proven outcome. Less weight means less gravitational load, and less load should mean less stretch on the skin envelope over time — but long-term comparative data against conventional implants, out at ten and twenty years, is still limited. We would rather say that plainly than imply a settled answer.
In absolute terms the saving also scales with volume. At 250cc the difference is modest. At 450cc or above it becomes meaningful, and it is at the larger end that patients most often report the difference in comfort.
Deansgate Hospital is a CQC‑registered independent hospital in central Manchester. Your surgery is performed by a consultant plastic surgeon on the GMC specialist register, who you meet at consultation and who will tell you whether B-Lite is genuinely worth the additional cost in your case.
Who Actually Benefits From B-Lite?
Four situations where the weight saving earns its cost — and one where it does not
B-Lite is an implant choice, not a different operation. The surgery, the recovery and the risks are those of a breast augmentation. What follows is where the lighter implant is worth choosing.
1. Larger Volumes
The clearest case. At higher volumes the absolute weight saved is greatest, and the load a large conventional implant places on the skin envelope is the thing most likely to stretch it over time. If you want a result at the larger end of what your tissue can carry, a lighter implant is a rational way to carry it.
2. Augmentation With an Uplift
The operation where the lift and the implant pull against each other — the uplift tightens and raises, the implant pushes out and down. A lighter implant reduces the force working against the lift you have just paid for. Given that augmentation mastopexy has the highest revision rate of the routine breast procedures, anything that reduces that tension is worth considering.
3. Revision After Bottoming Out or Stretch
Where an existing implant has stretched the lower pole, dropped below the fold, or thinned the overlying tissue, putting the same weight back into a weaker envelope invites the same outcome. Reducing the load is one of the few variables you can actually change at revision.
4. Active Lifestyles — With a Caveat
Patients who run, lift or train frequently often report lighter implants are more comfortable, and that is a reasonable thing to weight in your decision. It is a comfort benefit reported by patients rather than a measured outcome, and it should be described as such.
Where B-Lite is usually not worth it: a modest implant in someone with good natural breast tissue. At 250cc, under decent cover, the weight difference is small and the additional implant cost buys you very little. We will say so rather than take the upgrade.
Am I suitable for B-Lite implants?
What is assessed at consultation
Suitability for B-Lite is suitability for breast augmentation, plus one extra question about soft tissue cover.
Your surgeon measures chest width, breast base diameter, the distance from nipple to inframammary fold, skin quality and, importantly, the thickness of the tissue over the upper pole by pinch test. That last measurement is what decides whether a slightly firmer implant rim is likely to be palpable in your case.
Where cover is thin, the options are a conventional implant, a submuscular rather than subglandular pocket, a smaller volume, or all three — and that conversation happens before you commit to a device.
Beyond that: your weight should be stable, your family ideally complete, and you should be a non-smoker for at least six weeks either side of surgery. Implants are not lifetime devices, whichever you choose, and you should expect the possibility of further surgery at some point in a long life.
Soft Tissue Cover
The pinch test over the upper pole is the measurement that matters for B-Lite specifically. Thin cover and a firmer implant rim do not combine well, and that is assessed before the device is chosen.
Still an Implant
B-Lite can rupture, can develop capsular contracture and may need replacing, exactly as any implant can. Lighter does not mean permanent, and any claim that it removes the need for future surgery is wrong.
B-Lite Compared With Your Other Options
Where it sits among the implants we use
Conventional cohesive silicone implants remain the right choice for the majority. Decades of use behind them, the widest range of shapes and profiles, the softest edge, and the lowest implant cost. If you are having a moderate volume under good cover, this is very likely what you should have.
B-Lite trades a slightly firmer rim for up to 30% less weight. Worth it at larger volumes, alongside an uplift, at revision, and where load on the envelope is the thing you are trying to manage.
Motiva implants, including the Preservé technique we offer under local anaesthetic, are a different proposition again — the distinguishing features there are the shell and the surgical approach rather than weight. Motiva Preservé augmentation starts from £9,500 and has its own page.
Fat transfer to the breast uses no device at all, from £8,500, but delivers a modest volume increase and some of the transferred fat does not survive. It is a different operation for a different goal, not a lighter version of an augmentation.
B-Lite Implant Cost
From £9,500
Breast augmentation with B-Lite lightweight implants at Deansgate Hospital starts from £9,500.
For comparison, breast augmentation with conventional cohesive silicone implants starts from £5,950, and Motiva Preservé augmentation — a different proposition again, performed under local anaesthetic — from £9,500. The difference between the conventional and the lightweight option is the honest measure of what the weight saving is costing you, and it is worth weighing deliberately rather than treating as an automatic upgrade.
The fee covers your surgeon, your anaesthetist, the hospital, the implants, dressings and all routine follow-up for twelve months. Surgical bras and compression garments are not included.
Where B-Lite is used alongside an uplift, or at revision to replace existing implants, the operation is quoted individually at consultation because the extent varies. Assessment is a free consultation with a £25 booking deposit, redeemable against treatment, and you will be given a fixed written quotation with no obligation.
Your Breast Augmentation Journey
Choosing the implant, and everything that follows
Choosing B-Lite does not change the operation or the recovery — it changes the device. Here is the pathway from consultation to twelve-month review.
You are examined standing and lying down. Your surgeon measures chest width, breast base diameter, the nipple-to-fold distance, skin quality and stretch, existing asymmetry, and soft tissue thickness over the upper pole by pinch test.
Those measurements set the range of implant widths your chest can carry, and the pinch test is what determines whether a firmer implant rim is likely to be palpable — the question specific to B-Lite. Sizing is done properly with sizers in a bra, not by naming a cup size.
Photographs are taken for your record. You leave with written information, a fixed quotation with the implant cost stated separately, and a cooling-off period. Nobody is asked to decide on the day.
This is the conversation the page exists for. Your surgeon will tell you whether the weight saving is likely to matter in your case — which depends on the volume you are having, the quality of your tissue, whether an uplift is involved, and whether this is a primary or revision operation.
Where you are having a moderate volume under good cover, the honest answer is often that a conventional implant will serve you just as well for less money, and that is what we will say. Where you are having a large volume, or combining with an uplift, or revising a stretched envelope, the case for B-Lite is stronger.
Plane matters too. Submuscular or dual-plane placement gives more cover over the implant edge, which reduces the relevance of the firmer rim. Subglandular placement in a thin patient is where it matters most.
The operation is a standard breast augmentation. Under general anaesthetic, a pocket is created — usually dual plane or submuscular — through an inframammary, periareolar or axillary incision, and the implant is placed. Where an uplift is combined, the skin envelope is tailored around the implant using a periareolar, vertical or anchor pattern according to your degree of ptosis.
It takes around an hour to ninety minutes for augmentation alone, longer where an uplift is included. Deansgate Hospital is a day-case facility, so you go home the same day once your surgeon and the recovery team are happy with you.
Your implant details — make, model, size, batch — are recorded and you are given them, along with the manufacturer’s warranty information.
Week 1. Tightness and pressure rather than sharp pain, more so with submuscular placement. Support bra day and night. No lifting above shoulder height, no driving. Some patients do report a lighter implant feels more comfortable early on, though this is individual.
Week 2. Reviewed in clinic. Swelling settling. Desk-based work usually possible from the end of this week.
Weeks 3 to 6. Light walking only — nothing strenuous, nothing that raises your heart rate or blood pressure. Support bra around the clock for the full six weeks.
Six weeks onwards. Exercise resumes including chest work. The implants drop and settle into the pocket over three to six months and the breast takes its real shape; the change between six weeks and three months is substantial.
The risks are those of breast augmentation with any implant: bleeding, infection, altered nipple sensation, asymmetry, scarring, capsular contracture, rippling, implant malposition or rotation, and the eventual possibility of rupture and replacement.
Specific to B-Lite: the firmer implant rim means edge palpability is more likely where soft tissue cover is thin, which is assessed before the device is chosen rather than discovered afterwards.
Your surgeon will also discuss BIA-ALCL and breast implant illness with you as part of the consent process for any implant operation, and you will be given written information on both. B-Lite is CE marked and MRI compatible; as with any implant, tell the mammography service you have implants so images are taken and interpreted correctly.
No implant is a lifetime device. Claims that a particular implant removes the need for future surgery are not supportable, whichever brand makes them.
Deansgate Hospital is a registered independent hospital in central Manchester with its own theatres, its own ward and its own team. Your consultant plastic surgeon is on the GMC specialist register, you meet them at consultation, and they perform the operation themselves.
On implant choice specifically: we quote the device cost separately from the surgical fee, so you can see what the lighter implant costs and judge whether it is worth it. And where the answer is that a conventional implant would serve you just as well, we will tell you that rather than sell you the upgrade. Aftercare, follow-up and any revision required for a surgical complication are included in the quoted fee.
B-Lite Implants
Frequently Asked Questions
What are B-Lite implants?
Breast implants made by POLYTECH Health & Aesthetics in Germany that are up to 30% lighter than a conventional silicone implant of the same dimensions. The weight saving comes from hollow borosilicate microspheres permanently bonded within the cohesive silicone gel — hollow spheres occupy volume without contributing much mass. They are CE marked and MRI compatible, and come in round and anatomical shapes.
How much lighter are they really?
Up to 30% lighter for the same dimensions. That is a measured physical property, not a marketing estimate. But the saving scales with volume: at 250cc the absolute difference is modest, while at 450cc and above it becomes meaningful. That is why the case for B-Lite is strongest at larger volumes.
Are the microspheres safe?
They are biocompatible borosilicate, permanently bonded within the cohesive gel rather than floating free, and engineered to withstand pressures above 200 psi — around thirteen atmospheres — so they do not collapse or separate under the forces an implant experiences. The device is CE marked. As with any implant, your surgeon will discuss the general risks of breast implants including BIA-ALCL and breast implant illness as part of consent.
What is the downside?
The rim of a B-Lite implant is slightly firmer than the conventional equivalent. Under adequate soft tissue cover that is not detectable, but if you are slim, have little breast tissue of your own, or are having the implant placed in front of the muscle, a firmer edge is more likely to be felt or seen at the border. It is assessed by pinch test before the device is recommended. They also cost more than conventional implants.
Will they stop my breasts drooping over time?
Less weight means less gravitational load, and less load should mean less stretch on the skin envelope. That is a reasonable inference — but long-term comparative data against conventional implants out at ten and twenty years is still limited, and nobody should present it as settled. Gravity, ageing, pregnancy and weight change continue whichever implant you choose.
Do they last longer than normal implants?
There is no good evidence that they do, and any claim that they remove the need for future surgery is wrong. B-Lite implants can rupture, can develop capsular contracture and may need replacing, exactly as any implant can. No implant is a lifetime device.
Who benefits most from B-Lite?
Four groups: women having larger volumes, where the absolute weight saving is greatest; women combining an implant with an uplift, where a lighter implant works less against the lift; revision patients whose envelope has already been stretched by a heavier implant; and women who train frequently and report lighter implants are more comfortable. If you are having a modest implant under good cover, the benefit is small.
Can I have B-Lite with a breast uplift?
Yes, and it is one of the better indications for it. Augmentation mastopexy has the highest revision rate of the routine breast procedures because the lift pulls up while the implant pushes out and down — reducing the implant weight reduces the force working against the lift you have just paid for. B-Lite with an uplift is quoted individually at consultation; for reference, augmentation mastopexy with conventional implants starts from £8,950.
Can I swap my existing implants for B-Lite?
Yes. Exchanging existing implants for B-Lite is quoted individually at consultation, because what is involved varies — whether the capsule needs removing, whether an uplift is being combined, and what is found at operation. For reference, implant exchange with conventional implants starts from £6,950, or £9,500 with an uplift. Revision is a sensible point at which to consider a lighter device, particularly if your existing implants have stretched the lower pole or thinned the overlying tissue, since reducing the load is one of the few variables you can actually change.
Do they feel natural?
Under adequate soft tissue cover, most patients cannot distinguish them by feel from a conventional cohesive implant, and some report they feel more natural because of the reduced weight. Where cover is thin, the firmer rim may be palpable at the edge — which is the specific thing assessed at your consultation.
Are they safe for mammograms and MRI?
B-Lite is MRI compatible. As with any breast implant, tell the mammography service that you have implants so that the images are taken and interpreted correctly — implants do not prevent breast screening but they do change how it is performed.
How much do B-Lite implants cost in Manchester?
Breast augmentation with B-Lite lightweight implants at Deansgate Hospital starts from £9,500, covering your surgeon, anaesthetist, the hospital, the implants, dressings and routine follow-up. Conventional cohesive silicone implants start from £5,950 for the same operation — so the lightweight option carries a real premium, and whether it is worth it depends on your volume, your tissue and whether an uplift is involved. We will give you a straight answer at consultation rather than default to the more expensive device. Surgical bras are not included.
Considering lightweight implants?

B-Lite is a genuinely clever piece of engineering and it is the right choice for a specific group of patients — larger volumes, uplifts, and revisions of a stretched envelope. It is not automatically the better implant, and for a moderate augmentation under good cover it buys you very little.
